The cleanup of a corrosive liquid that spilled Friday afternoon during a tractor-trailer crash on I-285 in Cobb County could last well past midnight, fire officials said.

Several containers were in the truck when it crashed on I-285 south at South Atlanta Road, Cobb fire rescue spokesman Lt. Dan Dupree said.

The truck was hanging over a cement bridge, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or additional vehicles involved.

Hazmat officials were called in shortly after 5 p.m., when it was learned one of those containers was leaking, Dupree said.

All but one lane were blocked during rush hour and heavy delays are expected to continue, the Georgia Department of Transportation said.

The most recent GDOT update, posted about 10 p.m., says the cleanup has no known time of clearance.

“All motorists traveling in this direction should use alternate routes, or give extra time for travel,” the update on 511ga.org states.
