Nine people died in crashes over the New Year’s travel period, including a woman who was killed in a spin-out crash in Marietta, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
That eclipses the number of fatalities recorded in 2016, when eight people were killed in accidents.
In Sunday’s deadly crash in Marietta, 27-year-old Kristin Stiltner lost control of her 2011 Honda Accord and spun out on I-75 facing the wrong way, Marietta police spokesman Jared Rakestraw said.
As Stiltner tried to move her Honda from the roadway, two other cars hit hers and Stiltner became pinned, Rakestraw said.
She was rushed to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where she later died.
Few details have been released about the other deadly crashes over the New Year’s travel period, which began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Monday.
In addition to Marietta police, authorities in DeKalb, Fulton and Richmond counties reported traffic deaths, state Department of Public Safety officials said.
Statewide, there were 330 traffic crashes, 137 injuries, 6,542 citations, 10,680 warnings and 231 driving under the influence arrests.
