A man died after he was hit by a Norfolk Southern train along a northwest Georgia highway Thursday morning.

The accident involved a northbound train with three locomotives and 151 rail cars about 3:45 a.m. in the 1400 block of U.S. 11, according to a train official.

The man hit was on the tracks but not at a railroad crossing at the time of the accident, Norfolk Southern spokeswoman Susan Terpay said.

The Dade County coroner identified the man as Ronald Dwayne Starcher, 37, of Chattanooga.

“The actions that led up to this incident are still under investigation,” Dade County sheriff’s Sgt. Chad Payne said.

The train temporarily blocked several crossings in the Trenton area, the sheriff’s office said, but it has since moved.

The area is about 130 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
