Thursday is shaping up to be the wettest day of the week for North Georgia.

Widespread rain is falling for the morning commute, and Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said clouds and scattered showers will be present for the drive home this evening. While rain chances are diminishing for the afternoon, it will be hard to avoid getting wet at some point Thursday, Monahan said.

“You are going to have the opportunity to get in some outdoor plans, but more often then not the next couple of days we’re going to track wet weather,” he said. “It’s going to be kind of rainy, kind of wet and kind of cloudy over the next few days.”

Rain is 70% likely Thursday, and the morning hours will see the best chance of a shower, according to Channel 2. Rain chances diminish to 60% for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and wet weather is predicted to stick around into early next week.

Because of the soggy forecast, organizers of the Imagine Music Festival made the decision Wednesday to cancel the electronic dance music event, which was slated to begin Friday at Chattahoochee Hills. The Midtown Music Festival is still planned for Saturday and Sunday at Piedmont Park.

“The rain and clouds are keeping our temperatures down a bit,” Monahan said. “We were in the 70s yesterday; we’re going to be there again today.”

Atlanta’s projected high is 76 degrees, which is well below average for this time of year. Temperatures were the 60s to begin the day.

Monahan expects the rain activity to diminish by Thursday evening, before another round of wet weather kicks up Friday. Those to the north and east will see more dry times Friday, while those to the south and west have the best chance of a shower by the afternoon, according to Monahan.

Multiple crashes have been reported Thursday morning on the wet roads, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Inside the Perimeter, the biggest delays are on I-285 North after a crash blocked lanes at Paces Ferry Road.

Authorities are still blocking a right lane at 10 a.m., according to the Traffic Center. There are inner loop delays back to I-20.

“Slow down. The roads are wet,” traffic reporter Heather Catlin said. “Give people a little bit of grace.”

Just outside the Perimeter, two separate crashes on U.S. 78 were causing “huge delays” for westbound drivers, the Traffic Center reported. One was on the left shoulder and the other was in the left lane.
