Temperatures will eventually make their way to the mid-60s Thursday, but North Georgia is off to a chilly start, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Atlanta is in the lower 40s to begin the day, while the northeast Georgia mountains are waking up to temperatures in the 20s. Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said a coat is needed Thursday morning, but there will be no need for heavy layers later in the day.
“We’re expecting a lot of sunshine, some milder temperatures, and we’re going to keep it dry through the end of the work week,” Deon said. “But rain comes, unfortunately, for the weekend.”
Deon said Thursday will be ideal for running errands or holiday shopping while the kids are off at school. She expects temperatures will reach the 60s by noon before Atlanta tops out at a high of 66 degrees later in the day.
Wind should also stay on the light side Thursday, according to Channel 2.
“You’re going to be in fine shape, and so will the kids,” Deon said. “But make sure you remind them to put on those coats once they head out for recess.”
Deon said there just isn’t much moisture available Thursday with an area of high pressure dominating Georgia’s weather. The dry air should hold through at least Friday evening, she said, before a cold front ushers in more moisture Saturday.
“That is going to bring us some rain as we head into the weekend,” she said.
Rain is not likely to be an all-weekend event, according to Channel 2. Scattered showers are 40% likely Saturday afternoon and 30% likely Sunday.
Despite the rain, Deon said the mild temperatures should stick around through the weekend.
“But we are going to notice some cooler changes coming back into play by early next week,” she said.

A police investigation could complicate the commute for drivers in downtown Atlanta on Thursday morning, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Police activity has shut down North Avenue at Luckie Street.
Traffic reporter Ashley Frasca said it will affect the ride into Midtown west of the Downtown Connector.
In Cobb County, a crash with injuries has blocked the intersection of C.H. James Parkway and Humphries Hill Road, the Traffic Center reported. Wreckers were just arriving at the scene at 6 a.m.
Traffic reporter Mark Arum suggests drivers use Powder Springs or Austell roads to avoid the area.
“Give this a wide berth if you don’t mind,” Arum said.
