Thursday is starting off warm and dry in metro Atlanta, but afternoon storms are expected to move in ahead of an even wetter Friday.

That summer pattern of heat and rain will likely continue through the weekend, according to the latest forecast.

“Storms are likely this afternoon,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “It’s going to get pretty wet later today.”

At 75 degrees in the city, Atlanta is getting off to a relatively warm start. It’s only expected to get hotter, however, as temperatures reach the low 90s. With a 60% chance of scattered showers this afternoon, the rain will likely be more widespread than it has been the past few days.

“Rain is one thing. It’s the lightning that we worry about, and the strong wind gusts,” Monahan said. “I think we’re going to see some of that a little later today.”

The latest forecast shows the showers rolling through North Georgia sometime after 1 p.m., so those with outdoor plans may want to get to them before lunch.

“These are not going to move very fast,” Monahan said. “These are storms that are going to blow up over one neighborhood, they’re going to sit for a while and they’re gonna drop some heavy rain.”

The storms could knock down trees and power lines, according to Channel 2.

“A high risk of heavy rain, a high risk of frequent lightning and some of those storms are going to have some strong wind gusts later on this afternoon,” Monahan said.
