North Georgia should stay dry and humid all the way through lunchtime Thursday, but all bets are off this afternoon.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said that just like on Wednesday, “the sky is going to open up” after about 1 p.m. Scattered storms are 40% likely, and lightning is possible.

“Just be ready for rain at anywhere at any time,” Monahan said.

Temperatures are again headed for the 90s, with a projected high of 90 for Atlanta, according to Channel 2. The city fell just shy Wednesday with a high of 88 degrees. Monahan said the downpours will help to provide relief from the heat.

“You get underneath one of them, the temperatures will drop into the 70s and 80s,” he said. It is 71 degrees and partly cloudy in Atlanta before sunrise.

With the rain around, Monahan only expects about seven dry hours Thursday. North Georgia will see more of the same Friday and into the weekend, he said.

“Morning sunshine, afternoon showers and storms are pretty much the deal all the way through the five-day forecast,” he said. “Monday, there’s a change, and the reason for that has to do with Tropical Depression Fred.”

The tropical depression is passing over the Dominican Republic on Thursday morning and is headed for the Florida Panhandle, according to current storm track projections. Monahan said it could impact North Georgia weather early next week, ramping up both tropical moisture and rain chances.

In Atlanta, a busy surface street is at times shut down with a crash. Authorities are on the scene at University Avenue east of Pryor Road, according to the Traffic center. There could be delays leaving the Downtown Connector.
