While there is a chance for more rain Thursday, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said afternoon storms will be isolated.
That holds true for the next couple of days, Monahan said. A 30% chance of rain Thursday should mean fewer storms than Wednesday, which saw heavy downpours drench metro Atlanta late into the night.
“All of that heavy rain helped drop the humidity just a little bit, and that’s why it’s cooler out there this morning,” Monahan said. “Instead of 80, we are at 72 to start the day.”
The overnight rain also had the effect of some early morning fog. Visibility in Atlanta dropped to less than a tenth-mile before 6 a.m. as fog and low cloud cover rolled in. Drivers should watch their speeds and put beams on low until conditions improve, Monahan said.
Eventually the fog will burn off, leaving a mix of clouds and sun for the afternoon. Temperatures are headed to the upper 80s and should fall just shy of 90 degrees, according to Channel 2.
By 5 p.m., Monahan expects downpours to develop in the northeast Georgia mountains, with isolated showers in the city. The best chance of a thunderstorm is later this evening.
“Not a whole lot of rain, though, this afternoon or this evening,” he said. “Overnight, it will be partly cloudy. We’ll start the day dry on Friday morning, and then another chance of some isolated storms into the afternoon on Friday. Neither of the next two days are washouts.”
The pattern of morning sunshine and afternoon storms will change up slightly for the weekend, he said. For the most part, Monahan said moisture will stay to the south Saturday and Sunday, leaving North Georgia mainly dry with only a 20% chance of rain both days.
In the Caribbean, there is a “big time Gulf Coast tropical threat” developing that has the potential to impact Georgia’s weather next week. A wave with a 90% chance of becoming a tropical storm would be named Ida, and it is headed for the Gulf Coast.
“This could be a hurricane making rainfall early next week,” Monahan said. “It could have an impact on our weather locally Tuesday or Wednesday.”

The foggy conditions are not causing any major delays on the roads Thursday morning, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
In Cobb County, however, efforts to clean up a truck fire are causing “a brief tap of the brakes” for commuters passing Truist Park, traffic reporter Heather Catlin said.
Two right lanes were blocked on I-75 North past Windy Hill Road at 6:15 a.m. Those wishing to avoid the delays can take U.S. 41 as an alternate, Catlin said.
