A team from Gwinnett County’s Sweetwater Middle could set a national record this spring by becoming two-time WordMasters Challenge national champions. The Berkmar Cluster middle schoolers already have placed first twice this school year during the first two rounds of the vocabulary competition. The school also earned first place last school year. Should the 6th graders be successful in the third and final round in April, Sweetwater Middle will become the only school in the United States with two-consecutive years of earning the nation’s WordMasters honor. The WordMasters Challenge is a national competition for students in grades 3-8 that encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning, helping students think both analytically and metaphorically. During the first two WordMasters Challenge competitions earlier this school year, the Sweetwater Middle 6th grade team placed first in both rounds in the highest division, the Gold Division. Coached by Sweetwater Middle teacher Lois Bean, the team scored a perfect 200 points for each round.
