A man was arrested after shots were fired at police officers Wednesday afternoon in northeast Atlanta, authorities said.

The officers were not injured in the incident at Irwin and Sampson streets.

Two officers were parked in a patrol car when they heard a gunshot and saw the man.

“They saw a gentleman in a bush with a handgun,” said Sgt. Greg Lyon with the Atlanta Police Department. “When they looked over at him, he shot at them a couple of times and then ran on foot between these two complexes.”

The officers ran after the man and arrested him without incident. The officers did not fire their weapons, police said.

Derrick Lamar Byron, 27, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, use of a firearm by a felon during a crime and reckless conduct, police said.

Lyon said the incident was random.

“For an officer to just be sitting in a parking lot and be shot at, it’s rare,” Lyon said.

Several buildings were struck by the gunfire, but no one was injured, Officer John Chafee said.

The incident remains under investigation.
