Metro Atlanta residents can expect warmer weather over the next few days following a cold snap that brought us snow on Thursday and the coldest Christmas since 1989.

Sunday’s high is expected to reach 55 degrees in Atlanta, a warm-up of more than 20 degrees from Friday, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Jennifer Lopez said. There’s no rain in the forecast either, which should make Sunday a nice day to get outdoors. The morning low is still 28 degrees, however, so be sure to bring a coat along if you’re heading out early.

The rain should hold off through at least Wednesday evening, according to the latest forecast.

“The dry atmosphere will be throughout the Southeast for the next several days,” Lopez said. “That means our chances for rain will be low until we get to the end of this week.”

Unfortunately, she said, thunderstorms will likely into North Georgia just in time for New Year’s Eve. While Thursday’s high is 58 degrees in Atlanta, there is an 80% chance of rain.

Because it’s a holiday weekend and many people are traveling, the Georgia Department of Transportation has suspended lane closures along most busy interstates until 10 p.m. Sunday, officials said.
