A crucial link in a north-south bicycle and jogging path through the traffic-snarled heart of Buckhead is under construction, marked by a hole punched in a sound wall along Ga. 400.
"It may not look like much, but this break in the sound wall on Ga. 400 is actually construction starting on the latest section of PATH400," says an Instagram post by Livable Buckhead, which spearheaded the creation of the multi-use path.
This section extends from Miami Circle to the Gordon Bynum pedestrian bridge, which spans Ga. 400 and links Lenox Square to the Peachtree Park neighborhood on the highway’s west side.
The coming path will connect two existing stretches. The one to the south, which connects Lindbergh to Miami Circle, opened in December 2016. The one to the north — readily visible to drivers on Ga. 400 — connects the Buckhead business district to Wieuca Road farther north.
The PATH Foundation had targeted the pending stretch to be open by last spring, but project leaders have pushed the expected completion to next fall, according to Curbed Atlanta.
The pending stretch will weave through forest and around swampland and railroad tracks. See prior coverage, with images and videos describing the route. The plan is to eventually link to the BeltLine at Piedmont Park and connect to future stretches through Sandy Springs, creating a car-free path from Atlanta to the Perimeter.
