Two Spalding County schools were on lockdown briefly Thursday morning while sheriff’s deputies searched for a gunman who fired shots during a nearby robbery attempt.

Spalding sheriff’s Capt. Tony Ranieri told Channel 2 Action News that a man was walking home from work Thursday morning and was in the area of Tyus Park when he was approached by a man who tried to rob him at gunpoint.

The victim started running, and the suspect fired five to six shots at the man, who was not hit.

Sheriff’s deputies and K9 units were searching the area for the suspect.

Cowan Road Elementary School and Cowan Road Middle School were put on lockdown as a precaution.

Deputies called off around 9 a.m. and the lockdown was lifted.

After surviving Andersonville Prison, Union Army veteran Thomas O’Dea completed this drawing of it from memory in 1885. “In all the annals of civilization and barbarism, there never was, and I doubt never will be, such another place as Andersonville,” O’Dea wrote. “No truer sentence ever passed the lips of man, than when this was called the ‘Hell Upon Earth.’" (Courtesy National Park Service)
