A 26-year-old Gwinnett County man drowned Sunday afternoon in Lake Allatoona while attempting to retrieve a float, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
The man, identified by the Bartow County coroner as Ryan Tyndall, of Snellville, was swimming away from the shore near Allatoona Landing in Bartow County when he went under, DNR spokesman Mark McKinnon told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Emergency responders were called to the scene moments after 4 p.m., McKinnon said. Tyndall’s body was recovered at 4:34 p.m. He was not wearing a life preserver.
“We very rarely have a drowning victim that’s wearing a life jacket,” McKinnon said.
Sunday’s drowning was the 27th this year in Georgia waters and the fifth in Lake Allatoona. Three of the drownings in Lake Allatoona have been in Bartow County.
On June 21, Varun Krishnamurthy, 27, from India, drowned after he jumped off a platform tube and did not resurface, The AJC previously reported. Also in Bartow, Chance Werner, 18, drowned May 25 while playing a game in which people launch someone off a dock in a shopping cart.
Two other drowning victims in June included 6-year-old Corday Duffy, who wandered away from his family's campsite during a trip with his family, and Debra Hansard, 56, who died after she was found floating in water, according to the state DNR. Both Corday and Hansard were in Cherokee County at the time of the drownings.
