A pattern of summer storms is settling over Atlanta that spells frequent rain for the next several days, including Saturday.

“Saturday morning is starting out with soupy, tropical air,” Channel 2 Action News Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns said. “Partly to mostly cloudy, showers start to fire up in northwest Georgia around lunchtime.”

The forecast calls for a 40% chance of rain in the metro area developing in the afternoon, Burns said. The potential for rain won’t cool things off much; the high is expected to hit 88 degrees Saturday.

Some areas of metro Atlanta could see relatively strong thunderstorms, with cloud-to-ground lightning and heavy downpours, Burns said.

Similar weather is expected Sunday with an even greater chance of storms. Storms and rain are predicted every day through Wednesday, according to Burns.

There are few major traffic events to worry about this weekend aside from rainy weather and vacationers returning after a holiday week. None of Atlanta’s major sports teams are playing at home, with only the Atlanta Braves seeing action as they visit the Miami Marlins.

A busy Buckhead road will have a lane closure throughout the weekend. One lane of Roswell Road near the intersection with East Andrews Road will be closed all weekend as crews install a stormwater drain.

In Cobb and Paulding counties, Powder Springs Road will have one lane shut down during the daytime for a widening project, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The lane closure on Powder Springs Road will stretch a little more than six miles between Lost Mountain Road and South Marietta Parkway.

Work will also pick back up on the Transform 285/400 project, so be alert for new lane closures and traffic pacing around the junction of I-285 and Ga. 400.
