Metro Atlanta residents will likely end up spending most of the weekend indoors as widespread rain moves through the area.

Showers are expected across North Georgia on Saturday and Sunday, according to the latest forecast. The weekend will be chilly, too, as temperatures likely won’t make it above 50 degrees either day.

“Widespread rain moves into the area by (Saturday) morning,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said. “It’s going to be a wet start to the weekend so you’ll want to bring an umbrella as you head out.”

The chance of rain is 90% on Saturday and the afternoon high will top out at about 44 degrees. There will be some lulls in the rainfall, however, so the weekend may not be a complete washout, Nitz said. The rain should start to taper off by late afternoon or early Saturday evening.

Clouds are expected to linger through midweek, but the chance of rain drops to 40% for the second half of the weekend.

Clayton County drivers can expect some delays this weekend as the Georgia Department of Transportation begins a monthslong construction project on Frontage Road.

In addition, 40,000 people are expected to flock to downtown Atlanta this weekend for a national cheerleading competition at the Georgia World Congress Center. The three-day event is expected to draw close to 1,500 teams from as far away as California, Maine and Chicago.

Organizers say spectators will be limited and strict safety measures are in place amid the pandemic, but Atlanta residents can expect increased traffic around this weekend’s competition and at nearby hotels and restaurants.
