Spring is on the horizon this weekend, and the showers and thunderstorms that doused metro Atlanta much of the day Friday are gone.

A warm front swept in and brought dry conditions to North Georgia overnight Saturday.

That will mean dry skies all weekend as we prepare to move into the new season, said Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz.

Expect an early temperature of 53. It will warm up to a midday high of 63 degrees as we move into the afternoon. There’s a very slight chance of rain for the day.

“It’ll be partly cloudy and breezy through the afternoon,” Nitz said. “West winds 10 (mph), gusting at times to 20 mph. Won’t cause any problems.”

The first of spring, aka the vernal equinox, officially begins when the sun shines directly onto the Earth’s equator. That happens at 11:33 a.m. EST in the Northern Hemisphere on Sunday.

The gentle breezes from Saturday should continue to blow Sunday, according to Nitz’s forecast.

“And that’s blowing in drier air,” he said. “It’ll be sunny as we head into Sunday.”

No chances of rain and a high of 68 on Sunday is likely before moving into early next week when temps are expected to rise into the low- to mid-70s.

The warm weather won’t stop construction. Weekend road closures continue along Powder Springs Road between Windy Hill and Sandtown roads in Cobb County for a resurfacing project, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Drivers in Marietta should also expect overnight delays on Terrell Mill Road at I-75 this weekend. Lane closures there will help facilitate a DOT project to rehabilitate an overpass. An alternating lane of eastbound and westbound traffic will be closed on Terrell Mill at the overpass from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
