Residents living near a Rome wire plant that caught fire Wednesday afternoon were given the green light to return home several hours later.
The Floyd County Police Department announced on its Facebook page just after 6 p.m. that residents were allowed to return home about four hours after part of the Bekaert plant on Darlington Drive caught fire. The facility makes steel wire used in tires, rubber hoses and other products.
The Rome News-Tribune reported that all employees were able to escape the building after the fire started around 2 p.m. The blaze originated on a bead wire line where it plates the wire, starting in one of the hoods and spreading to the ceiling. The fire led authorities to evacuate residents near the plant, while those living within a half mile of it were asked to leave their homes.
Channel 2 Action News reported that most of the smoke had dissipated by 5 p.m.
