Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed on Friday named the city’s new director of communications.
Anne Torres, who came to work for the city in 2012 to oversee social media efforts, begins her new role immediately.
“Anne’s commitment to public service and years of government communications experience make her uniquely qualified to lead our communications effort,” Reed said in a statement. “We are fortunate to have her as a key member of our team. She plays an essential and strategic role in my administration, and her leadership and counsel is invaluable to me.”
Carlos Campos, who has served as the city’s interim director since last fall, will return to his former post with the Atlanta Police Department. Former communications director Sonji Jacobs Dade left the administration for the private sector in September 2013.
Before joining Reed’s administration, Torres worked as the director of communications for former Mayor Cory Booker in New Jersey. She will earn about $135,000 in her new role.
Melissa Mullinax will continue to serve as the city’s deputy director of communications. Torres said there are no plans to hire an additional communications employee.
Reed also recently appointed Samir Saini as the city’s new commissioner of the Department of Information Technology. Saini has served as the Atlanta Housing Authority’s chief information officer since 2010.
Saini’s appointment will be effective Aug. 11. His role must be confirmed by the Atlanta City Council. Michael Dogan has served as the city’s interim IT commissioner since 2011 at a salary of $155,000.
