Friday the 13th saw much of the nation experiencing some very unlucky weather.

While metro Atlantans and much of the Southeast woke to cold rain Friday, heavy snow continued falling in the Pacific Northwest. A wet, wintry and windy Saturday is forecast in the Northeast.

A stream of moisture will continue to produce snow across the Cascades and the northern and central Rockies into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS has issued winter storm warnings and advisories across the West’s higher elevations that will continue into the weekend.

In the South, a low-pressure system is strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico, causing showers all over the region. Severe weather is also possible across South Georgia, northern Florida and southern South Carolina on Friday afternoon.

Further north, below-freezing temperatures are forecast for the southern and central Appalachians, setting the stage for freezing rain. Winter weather advisories are in effect from western North Carolina to the Appalachians bordering the Mason-Dixon Line.

The storm is expected to strengthen and move up the Eastern Seaboard on Friday night, reaching the Northeast on Saturday. Northern New England will be met with a wintry mix Friday afternoon before changing over to all rain Friday night.

Lake-effect snow showers will form downwind of the Great Lakes as cold temperatures and brisk winds return. Some accumulating snowfall is likely, with locally heavy amounts possible.
