A pregnant woman was found unresponsive in Troup County in a car perforated with bullet holes Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Deputies and Georgia State Patrol troopers were called to Ga. 18 near East Drummond Road around 12:50 p.m. regarding a single-car crash, Troup sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Stewart Smith said. At the scene, authorities found a Honda Accord with Akeila Ware, 29, of LaGrange, unresponsive and shot inside, GSP spokeswoman Franka Young confirmed. What appeared to be multiple bullet holes pierced the side of the car, Smith said.

Ware was extricated and taken to a Columbus-area hospital in critical condition; she later died. Her unborn child also died, Smith said.

The crash appears to stem from a shooting involving a person in another vehicle, Young said. Authorities believe it might have happened near the intersection of Ga. 18 and Whitesville Road, Smith said. The second vehicle is thought to be a silver Nissan with possible front-end damage, Smith added.

“It does appear to be a targeted crime at this point, not a random road rage,” Smith told Channel 2 Action News.

The GSP is responsible for the crash investigation and the sheriff’s office is investigating the homicide.
