Horseplay with a gun led to a shooting Tuesday night that left a teenager dead, DeKalb County police said.

DeKalb police Capt. S.R. Fore said officers responding to a 9:15 p.m. report of a person shot at a home in the 900 block of Millard Road found a 17-year-old with a gunshot wound to the torso. The teen was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

“It has been reported to police that a group of individuals were at the residence playing with a gun,” Fore told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Wednesday.

“At some point, the weapon discharged, striking the victim,” Fore said in an email. “The other party involved fled the scene prior to police arrival.”

He said officers recovered the handgun at the scene.

The victim’s name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.
