Atlanta police said a man admitted to shooting someone eight times in southwest Atlanta Tuesday night.

The suspect, 23-year-old Michael Roberson, claimed that the shooting was in self-defense.

About 11:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a person shot in the 200 block of Inspiration Way, according to an incident report.

Officers found Steven Cutno across the street and rushed him to Grady Memorial Hospital. He had been shot in the chest, hip, arms and hands, but was stable, according to the report. His current condition was not immediately available.

Roberson claimed that he believed Cutno was trying to rob him, police said. In a statement he gave to police, Roberson said as he was parking at a friend’s house, Cutno, who Roberson knew as ‘Cutta,’ approached him and shouted, “We got beef.”

Roberson said that he saw Cutno reach in his front waistband and pull out a black handgun and point it at him, according to the report. Roberson then pulled his Glock Model 19 from his car and emptied his gun towards Cutno, police said. When the gun was empty, Roberson fled on foot, authorities said.

Police did not find a weapon on Cutno when they canvassed the scene Tuesday. Roberson returned to the area voluntarily and gave his statement to police Tuesday night.

Roberson is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Fulton sheriff’s spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan said.
