After a water leak at Atlanta’s E-911 center forced the city to turn to backup generators, the call center has returned to normal operations, Atlanta police announced Monday night.
Despite the electrical challenges, all 911 calls continued to be answered, Atlanta police Deputy Chief Timothy Peek said. The Atlanta Police Department announced on social media that all services had been restored shortly after 7 p.m.
“Our E-911 center is operational. We have never stopped receiving our 911 calls,” Peek said earlier Monday. “If you need 911 services, they are there. Again, we never stopped.”
Peek said some residents called 911 just to “check” to see if the system is working. But that overloads the system, he said.
Those needing emergency services were being told to stay on the line, even if there is a delay in reaching an operator.
“If you should have the need to call 911, we ask that you dial the number and stay on the line,” Peek said. “Do not hang up and start over.”
Further details about the extent of the damage have not been released.
