A North Carolina woman and a burglar exchanged gunfire early Wednesday morning inside a Burlington home, WXII reported.
The woman told police she was awakened around 4 a.m. by the sound of breaking glass in her kitchen, the television station reported.
The woman, whose 10-year-old son was also asleep in the home, armed herself with a pistol and confronted the man, who opened fire with a semiautomatic pistol, WXII reported.
The woman returned fire and the suspect escaped through the broken kitchen window, the television station reported.
Police described the burglar as a black male in his early to mid-20s, who was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, WXII reported.
The woman and her son were not injured, said police, who added the woman would not be facing charges.
