The 19-year-old had just left a hardware store and was walking along the tracks near in Mount Pleasant when she was struck.

The train operator said he was blowing on the horn, but the girl apparently did not hear it.

“The challenging part (in the rescue) is the girl was underneath the engine,” Mount Pleasant Fire Chief Jerry Lucia said.

She was conscious when she was taken to the hospital. The teen suffered a cut on her head and an ankle injury but was otherwise all right, police said.
