A fire ripped through a Gwinnett County apartment building Saturday morning, displacing about 20 residents just hours after Christmas.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at the Medlock Woods Apartments in Peachtree Corners shortly before 3 a.m. after a 911 caller reported hearing an explosion, Gwinnett County fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.
Crews arrived to find the fire burning through several upstairs apartments and the attic of the 10-unit building, he said. Residents were able to evacuate quickly, and no injuries were reported.
It took crews nearly an hour to get the fire under control, Rutledge said, adding the blaze caused heavy damage to five or six upstairs units. The apartments directly below the fire also sustained smoke and water damage.

The American Red Cross is assisting about 20 people displaced by the fire, though the exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
“The fire investigator has not been able to locate or speak with occupants in the unit where the fire is believed to have started,” Rutledge said. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 678-518-4890.
