Forsyth County sheriff’s officials are still on the scene at Lake Lanier trying to determine if a mass found by surface sonar is the body of a man missing since he fled an unauthorized party at the lake Monday night.

The party at Two Mile Creek Park, where authorities said there was underage drinking, was broken up by a deputy around midnight. Some at the party scattered and ran into the lake, including one man who has not been accounted for, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

Authorities are continuing surface sonar operations on the lake and gathering information, but are not yet certain enough of the find to make the decision to send in a dive team, as doing so subjects divers to a rough situation and uses a lot of manpower, Forsyth County Fire Chief Jason Shivers told the AJC Wednesday evening.

“It’s not as simple as diving a swimming pool; you’re talking about a very hazardous environment,” he said. “We take these things very seriously.”

He said they will only send a team when they have a “very high level of confidence” in what they think they’ve found.

The man’s identity has not yet been released.
