A man is dead and a woman is critically injured after a driver fleeing police crashed in Roswell, throwing them both from the car.

The incident began when Alpharetta police sent out an alert for other agencies to be on the lookout for a group of cars traveling together and “engaging in reckless behavior,” the Roswell Police Department said in a statement. A Roswell police officer on patrol saw the group on Holcomb Bridge Road shortly after midnight, the agency said.

The officer saw one of the vehicles, an Infiniti G37, laying drag near the intersection with Ga. 400, the department said. The officer turned on his blue lights and tried to stop the vehicle, but the car sped away at “a high rate of speed.”

Initially, the officer followed the car, but the chase ended near the intersection of Holcomb Bridge Road and Calibre Creek Parkway. The Infiniti continued driving away, police said.

Police later found the vehicle later after it crashed near Scott Road, throwing two of its occupants from the car, authorities said.

The man and the woman were rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the man ultimately died from his injuries. His name was not released.

“Two additional subjects were witnessed exiting the wrecked vehicle under their own power, before getting into another vehicle which immediately fled the scene as well,” police said. They have not been located.

Roswell police and the Georgia State Patrol are still investigating the fatal crash.
