A verbal fight between a man and woman in Jonesboro escalated to gunfire Wednesday morning and ended with the woman in the hospital and the man in custody, police said.

Clayton County officers responded to a home in the 400 block of Rosewood Circle just before 4:30 a.m. after getting calls about someone being shot.

“Once the door was finally opened for officers, the victim was located at the bottom of the stairs with a gunshot wound,” police said in a Facebook post.

During the investigation, officers said they discovered that the man, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Harris, and the woman had been fighting. They determined Harris shot the woman as she tried to leave the house, police said in the post. Three children were inside the home at the time.

The woman was taken to the hospital, but the severity of her injuries was not disclosed by police.

Officers gave Harris commands to leave the house and he was taken into custody “without incident,” according to the post. He was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and third-degree cruelty to children.
