Two sisters accused beating a boy to death for eating a cupcake will not go to trial this week, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office confirmed.
Glenndria and LaShirley Morris were scheduled for trial on Tuesday in the beating death of 3-year-old Kejuan Mason, but their attorneys are expected to file a continuance, a spokesman with the Fulton district attorney's office said.
A reason for the continuance was not given. Efforts to reach their attorneys were unsuccessful.
The delay comes a week after The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported LaShirley Morris and five other women were charged in a Feb. 9 attack at the Fulton County Jail. A jail report does not say what led to the attack, but the victims allege their attackers rushed into their cell and began beating and stomping on them. A sergeant on duty at the jail said the beating was gang-related, according to Fulton court documents.

Fulton prosecutors allege LaShirley Morris fatally beat the boy with a baseball bat for eating a cupcake as punishment. A child inside the home witnessed the attack, according to a Division of Family and Children Services report.

Because she did not intervene during the fatal beating, Glenndria Morris also faces second-degree murder and second-degree child cruelty charges, according court records.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Kejuan died of blunt force trauma to the head and torso.
Kejuan and three of his siblings entered DFCS care after their mother was arrested on a reckless conduct charge in March 2017. His mother, Geraldine Mason, would allegedly leave her children home alone, had anger issues and abused the children, according to DFCS records.
Geraldine Mason was released in April and reunited with one of her children but requested temporary guardianship for Kejuan and his twin brother, according to DFCS records. Mason suggested Morris, the boy’s godmother, act as his guardian.
According to DFCS documents, Mason said Morris prevented her from visiting her children, who lived in poor conditions under Morris’ care.
Glenndria and Lashirley Morris are also charged with aggravated assault and first and third-degree child cruelty. They face life in prison if convicted.
