A 25-year-old man died after an accident in the Chattahoochee River, Sandy Springs police said.
About 8:30 p.m. Saturday, a group of men were tubing and stopped where there was a rope swing and rock cliffs, Sgt. Sam Worsham said.
The victim, identified as Christian Collis of Douglasville, “fell from the cliff, struck some rocks at the base, and went under the water,” Worsham said. “His friends attempted to locate him but were unsuccessful.”
Cobb County fire and swiftwater rescue crews found Collis’ body at Sandy Point Park on Akers Drive, according to Worsham. He was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“With large amounts of rain, river levels and currents are at extremely dangerous levels,” Worsham said. “We ask all to avoid the river until water levels and the current return to safe levels for swimming.”

Hours before the accident in Sandy Springs, the body of Karon Antiwoin Jackson, 21, of Lawrenceville, was pulled from Lake Lanier, officials said.
“Friends of the victim stated they had swum out to the boundary of the beach area at the park and were returning to shore when the victim went into distress and under the surface of the water,” Gwinnett fire spokesman Justin Wilson said. “Multiple bystanders attempted to assist the victim without success.”

Due to high water levels at Lake Lanier, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is releasing water out of Buford Dam into the river 24 hours a day for two weeks. That began the afternoon of May 30, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.
