Kennesaw will spend $3.8 million for the Phase 1 construction of the Smith Gilbert Gardens Visitor Center and Phases 6 and 7 of Depot Park.

The 5-0 decision was made recently by the Kennesaw City Council.

This low bid was submitted by J. G. Leone Enterprises, Inc.

Funding will be provided by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) from 2011 and 2016.

Smith-Gilbert Gardens, 2382 Pine Mountain Road, is owned by the city.

A mile from Kennesaw City Hall, the city’s botanical garden contains more than 4,000 plant species on 17 acres, surrounding the historic Hiram Butler House (c. 1880).

Depot Park is in downtown Kennesaw, 2828 Cherokee St., on about 12 acres across from the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History.

Phase 6 will provide an additional parking lot to serve both the park and the museum.

The lot will be built in two phases.

Phase 6 includes construction of the first half of the parking lot.

Phase 12, the final phase, will complete the lot once the Sardis Street extension has been constructed.

Phase 7 is an event/parking lawn that is designed as a flex space to accommodate tents or transform into overflow parking for concerts and events.

The upper meadow is intended to provide a more naturalistic setting to accommodate picnics, trails and a range of activities.
