A man who ran out of gas on the side of I-285 in southwest Atlanta is recovering Monday after he was hit by a vehicle.

The 24-year-old man was refueling his vehicle on the shoulder of I-285 South just past Cascade Road when he was hit, Atlanta police told AJC.com. The driver stayed on scene until officers arrived just before 1:30 a.m.

The victim was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical but stable condition.

An investigation into the accident tied up traffic for several hours overnight, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Police were still on scene through 4 a.m.
