Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a fire at a Lawrenceville duplex Thursday morning.

Gwinnett County fire crews responded Thursday morning to a fire that may have been caused by an insect repellent candle.

Firefighters responded at 7:25 a.m. to a fire on Downing Street in Lawrenceville. It was initially reported as a grass or woods fire, but was upgraded to a multi-family dwelling fire when firefighters saw a thick column of smoke coming from the area. The smoke was coming from the back of a two-story duplex, according to the department.

Flames “engulfed” the building’s second floor, but nobody was found inside. The fire eventually broke through the roof, causing significant damage on the exterior of the building as well as inside.

The duplex’s occupants were home at the time of the fire and got out of the building when they noticed flames on the back porch. The residents were not injured, but a firefighter sustained a minor ankle injury at the scene. He was assessed at the scene and did not go to a hospital.

Fire investigators have not determined the fire’s cause, but believe it may have been a bug repellent candle.
