Fifty-one Gwinnett County seniors will receive a total of $1 million in scholarships courtesy of the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation.

The scholarships are the result of Gwinnett County Public Schools winning the 2010 Broad Prize, a prestigious award that honors big, urban districts that have significantly improved the academic performance of minorities and low income students.

Broad Prize scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who have lifted their grades over the course of their high school career and have a financial need. Scholarship recipients who enroll in four-year institutions receive $20,000 over four years. Students who attend two-year schools receive $5,000 scholarships over two years.

Principal Bob Jackson of Meadowcreek High School in Norcross said his students were thrilled about receiving the financial awards. “This is a life changing scholarship for many of our kids,” Jackson said. “I’m excited for these students and families.”

Eli Broad, founder of The Broad Foundation, said in a press release: "We congratulate these students for their academic success but, more importantly, for improving their performance during high school. Their achievement is also a testament to the support and dedication from their parents, teachers, administrators and the entire Gwinnett County community. We look forward to their continued success in college and beyond."
