One day in the near future, a massive former Army post may essentially serve as a mini-city for civilians.

That vision was put forth this week during a presentation of the draft master plan for a 145-acre portion of Fort McPherson.

The concept includes four distinct districts: 

• Campbellton District would house a public entrance to the property and a town square

• Market District would mimic that of live-work-play communities, with a supermarket, restaurants, offices, multi-family residences and arts venues

• Historic District would include most of the remaining historic buildings

• Western District would feature educational facilities and housing

The final master plan will be presented in May, according to a spokeswoman. Redevelopment goals include affordable housing, shopping, education and training.

McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority, also known as Fort Mac LRA, is the agency steering the partial redevelopment of the decommissioned military base, which closed in 2011.

Macauley Investments is in charge of reviving existing buildings and creating new development in the areas not occupied by filmmaker Tyler Perry's film and television studio on 330 acres at the southwest Atlanta property.
