Former Clayton sheriff Victor Hill may face charges
Former Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill has been notified that authorities are seeking criminal charges against him, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Steve Fry, Hill's attorney, told Channel 2 that Hill has been served with a proposed indictment with possible charges including theft by taking and use of a county credit card while out of town. The allegations have been denied.
According to Georgia law, as a law enforcement officer, Hill is entitled to the notice of a proposed indictment, Fry told Channel 2. The attorney said there would be no formal charges unless a grand jury decided the allegations should be pursued, the report said.
Hill told Channel 2 that the proposed indictment is to stop him from running for sheriff again.
"I want the citizens of Clayton County to know that no matter what, my name will be on that ballot," he said.
During Hill's tenure as sheriff, he fired 27 deputies on his first day in 2005. Those deputies later were awarded $7 million from Clayton County in a wrongful termination suit. Hill also was under fire for giving badges to more than 100 friends who were not involved in law enforcement.
Sheriff Kem Kimbrough was elected in 2008, defeating Hill, who filed for bankruptcy the day before leaving office.
