DeKalb officials are asking residents to participate in an annual food drive to benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Commissioner Kathie Gannon is partnering with District Attorney Sherry Boston, Solicitor General Donna Coleman-Stribling, Superior Court Clerk Debra DeBerry and Tax Commissioner Irvin Johnson to promote food donations.

Contributions can be made in person at barrels across the county or on the food bank's website.

“There is a sharp drop-off in donations after the holiday season and this time of year the Food Bank shelves are bare,” Gannon said in a statement. “I want to thank the citizens and employees of DeKalb County who have been very generous over the years. I’m asking them to help again this year. Food insecurity — not knowing where your next meal will come from — is still a problem.”

The county has set up barrels at the tax commissioner’s offices, the Maloof auditorium in Decatur, three senior centers and the county libraries in Tucker, Chamblee, Decatur, Stonecrest and Hairston Crossing.

The most needed items are canned fruit, vegetables, tuna, whole grain cereals, rice, beans, peanut butter, diapers and paper products, Gannon’s office said. The food drive runs through March 6.

During last year’s food drive, the county donated the equivalent of 10,000 meals and  $1,800 in monetary contributions to the food bank, Gannon said.
