Construction is underway at the new Lidl grocery store slated for a Dunwoody shopping center.

The Germany-based grocer, known for offering discounted goods, is taking the spot formerly occupied by Sprouts at 2480 Mount Vernon Road.

“We are currently going through demolition on our site in Dunwoody and expect to have more to share on (the) grand opening date over the coming months,” Lidl spokeswoman Chandler Ebeier said.

The shopping center is located in a triangle between Mount Vernon, Jett Ferry Road and Dunwoody Club Drive.

Former Dunwoody councilman Terry Nall posted a photo on Monday showing the extent of the interior renovations.

Lidl's entry to the Dunwoody market is part of the company's plans to expand its presence in metro Atlanta. It has stores in Mableton, Austell and Snellville, and recently got approval to open locations in Marietta and DeKalb County near East Lake.

The company also announced plans to build a 925,000-square-foot regional distribution center in Covington. Lidl US Chairman Roman Heini said the new facility allows the company to "expand our network of stores across the region."

Lidl, which rhymes with needle, has more than 10,500 stores in 29 countries.
