If you’ve ever wondered how your town or neighborhood got its name, it might behoove you to ask Cathy J. Kaemmerlen. She literally wrote the book on it.

She published “Georgia Place Names: From Jot-em-Down to Doctortown” earlier this year, detailing the origin stories behind the names of dozens of Georgia places.

The DeKalb History Center is hosting Kaemmerlen at a “Hops at the History Center” event on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 6 to 7 p.m. The book includes the backstories for several neighborhoods and cities in DeKalb, including Panthersville, Snapfinger and Doraville.

Kaemmerlen will speak about some of the most puzzling town names around Georgia; her book looks into spots like Enigma, Cow Hell, Stonesthrow and Gum Pond.

Tickets cost $5 for history center members and $10 for non-members, and come with one drink ticket and a book signing. Books will be available for purchase during the event, which will take place on the second floor of the Historic DeKalb Courthouse. Tickets can be purchased online.
