No students or employees were injured Thursday morning when a car crashed into a school cafeteria in Cherokee County, an official said.

The cafeteria suffered “significant” damage, a spokeswoman said.

The incident happened about 10:30 a.m. at ACE Academy in Canton, Cherokee schools spokeswoman Carrie McGowan said.

The driver of the vehicle is believed to have suffered a medical emergency after entering the parking area and lost control of the vehicle, McGowan said.

The driver and passenger, who went to the school to pick up their child, were taken to a hospital for treatment, McGowan said.

“No students were inside the cafeteria as the event occurred prior to the start of lunch,” McGowan said. “All school nutrition employees were inside the kitchen.”

Students were served lunch in the gym Thursday.

A structural evaluation of the cafeteria will be done before repairs begin, McGowan said. Students and staff will remain on an alternate plan for meals while repairs are in progress.

ACE Academy has about 275 students in grades 6-12.
