A 36-year-old Atlanta woman was killed early Saturday in Middle Georgia when her car slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer in a chain-reaction crash on I-16, according to a report.
Tracey Williams of a Sublime Trail address was headed east when the incident happened just before 6 a.m., according to the Telegraph of Macon.
A Twiggs County man, 40-year-old Akendrick Wilmore, was charged in connection with the crash, the Georgia State Patrol told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an email.
Wilmore, the driver of the first car in the crash, was charged with DUI less safe, first-degree vehicular homicide, driving on a suspended license, impeding the flow of traffic and violating taillight requirements, said Trooper Brian Jones of the GSP.
Eight vehicles, including the truck Williams hit, were involved in the crash, Sgt. First Class J.B. Clifton of the GSP told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“There was an accident that had already occurred, I would guess 20 yards, 50 yards ahead, and that accident caused a chain reaction of cars going into the rear of other cars,” Twiggs County Coroner Harold Reece told the Telegraph. “An 18-wheeler had stopped to avoid hitting those wrecked vehicles.”
Williams, who was driving a silver Honda sedan, “obviously didn’t see” the truck and ran into the back of it, Reece said.
Williams’ son, about 5 or 6 years old, was in a car seat in the back seat, the newspaper reported. He was taken to a hospital in Macon with injuries that were not life threatening.
