Dozens of suspected illegal street racers are facing charges after officers allegedly caught them preparing to race Sunday in Clayton County.

The police operation near Charles West Grant Parkway and Airline Museum Way ended with 25 arrests, 16 vehicles impounded and six weapons seized, Clayton County police Capt. William Ibarrondo told Channel 2 Action News.

“We had two AR-15s, one shotgun and three Glocks,” Ibarrondo said.

Businesses along Tradeport Drive and Airline Museum Way complained about property damage from cars doing “doughnuts” in parking lots.

“It cost $30,000 for them to resurface that whole parking lot,” Ibarrondo said.

The alleged racers were known to meet on Sundays and block off roads to race, Ibarrondo said.

But when the rain prevented the group from racing this past Sunday, officers made arrests on related charges.

“Traffic offenses, plus the criminal trespass and the criminal damage to the property and the loitering or prowling in the middle of the night,” Ibarrondo said. “They have no just cause to be there.”
