New subpoena seeks leave, payout records of ex-Mayor Reed’s cabinet

Federal authorities want to see records for every member of former Mayor Kasim Reed's cabinet, documents show.

The federal corruption investigation at Atlanta City Hall has expanded again — this time into former Mayor Kasim Reed’s circle of closest advisers, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution learned Monday.

U.S. prosecutors last week issued a subpoena demanding documentation of all requests and approvals for any type of leave for each member of Reed’s cabinet, from Jan. 1, 2014, through Jan. 15, 2018. The subpoena also asks for all records related to payouts and leave balances for each cabinet member; along with the city’s policies, procedures and training materials related to leave.

The time frame includes about two weeks of Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms administration, during which nearly all of Reed’s advisers were retained by the newly elected mayor.

The mayor’s cabinets are made up of about 40 department heads and their assistants. Reed replaced several departmental leaders during his last four years in office, so the number of people for which prosecutors are seeking records is higher.

The subpoena is dated July 16, and was released to the AJC and Channel 2 Action News on Monday evening. It is at least the ninth subpoena issued during the 18 months that the investigation has been known to the public, and gives the city until Aug. 28 to turn over responsive documents to a federal grand jury.
