Former Cobb Commissioner George “Woody” Thompson passed away Sunday at the age of 71.

He was recently diagnosed with cancer, according to a statement from the county.

Thompson represented south Cobb from 1996 until 2004, and from 2008 to 2012. He was particularly active in the redevelopment of Mableton.

“He never talked about himself and he never took a bow, and for a politician that’s almost impossible,” said his brother, Steve Thompson, a former state senator. “He was just the best brother anybody could have.”

Thompson said his brother was a big supporter of Cobb parks and libraries, and was instrumental in getting improvements made to dangerous intersections around Mableton, Austell and Powder Springs.

Visitation with the family is scheduled for  Tuesday, March 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Davis-Struempf funeral home in Austell.

The funeral is set for Wednesday, March 28 at 2 p.m. at Southwest Christian Church on Washington Road.
