Zac Brown Band lead guitarist and Georgia native Coy Bowles was slated to join Gov. Nathan Deal and others today to kick off “Read Across Georgia” Month, an annual campaign supporting increased childhood literacy across the state.

First lady Sandra Deal will introduce Bowles – who also writes children’s books – and highlight his new book “Will Powers: Where There’s a Will There’s a Way,” at the Capitol at 1 p.m.

State officials say “Read Across Georgia” is a time to “emphasize the importance of reading and to encourage children and non-reading adults to practice the skill until it is mastered,” according to a released statement from the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning.

Launched in 2012, the “Read Across Georgia” campaign supports the governor’s Grade Level Reading Initiative with the goal of having all Georgia students reading at or above grade level by the end of the third grade. To support this goal and to promote statewide childhood literacy, the first lady will visit and read to Georgia’s pre-K and elementary school students across the state during March.
