Two schools have dropped from the list of those that could be targeted for takeover under Gov. Nathan Deal’s proposed Opportunity School District.
There are now 139 that would be eligible if the measure is approved through a constitutional amendment, said Erin Hames, the governor’s deputy chief of staff for policy. The proposed district would select a maximum of 20 schools from the list.
Hames revealed the slight change in the list while updating Deal’s Education Reform Commission at their meeting Friday. The group is studying funding, school choice, teacher recruitment and other issues before making recommendations for new policies later this year.
The Opportunity District, meanwhile, is moving through the General Assembly on a faster track. Deal’s office created a list of 141 schools that failed to meet Georgia’s minimum performance measures for three years, but the calculations were off for two schools, including, in metro Atlanta, Martin Luther King Jr. High School in DeKalb County. The other school was Jefferson Elementary in Twiggs County.
