The Georgia Board of Education will decide Thursday whether to approve high school math curriculum changes that would allow schools to deviate from the current “integrated” method of teaching algebra and geometry.

Coordinate algebra and analytic geometry would be taught as discrete courses, and struggling freshmen would have access to an algebra “foundations” course. These subjects are now taught in a combined manner that has confounded some students.

A board discussion will occur this afternoon at the Georgia Department of Education offices in downtown Atlanta at 205 Jesse Hill Jr. Drive SE. The board will meet again Thursday at 8 a.m. to vote on this proposal and other matters.
