No sales tax this weekend on school supplies, clothes, computers

Georgia's 2016 sales tax holiday for clothing, computers and school supplies is July 30 to July 31 this year.

Parents can save money on clothes, school supplies and even computers this weekend during Georgia's annual back-to-school sales tax holiday.

The tax break, available Saturday and Sunday, is limited to purchases up to $20 per school-supply item, $100 per article of clothing and $1,000 per computer. It applies to both state and local sales taxes, which can exceed a 20th of the cost of a purchase.

The sales tax exemption for clothing includes shoes but does not apply to accessories such as jewelry, watches or purses.

Book bags will be exempt from sales taxes those two days, along with an array of items including calculators, paper and pencil, textbooks, and computers and computer accessories such as flash drives, docking stations, monitors, modems and mouses.

Georgia revived the back-to-school tax holiday in 2012, after going without one the previous three years.

A second sales-tax holiday, for energy- or water-efficient appliances or equipment for homes such as air conditioners, refrigerators, doors and windows, will be Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
